Speaking with eloquence to spare

In England, there is one accent that has come to stand out above all others conveying associations of respectable social standing and a good education. This ‘prestige’ accent is known as Received Pronunciation or RP.

Accents tell us which part of the country or which part of the world a person comes from, RP tells us only about a speaker’s social or educational background. Because RP had few regional overtones and was more widely understood than any regional accent, it came to be adopted by the BBC when radio broadcasting began in the 1920s. The term RP and BBC English became synonymous. RP continues to be used in the Court, Parliament, Church of England, the Legal Profession and in other national institutions.

This workshop covers:

Phonetics – vowels, diphthongs, consonants, word stresses, sentence stresses, knowing and recognising especially words with similar spellings, transcription of words into phonetic symbols, how to use the English Pronunciation Dictionary, speech making, comportment, confidence building etc.

Who should attend?

Anyone who wishes to be more articulate, better understood and taken more seriously when addressing an audience or in everyday communication; anyone who makes presentations of any kind – chief executives, managers, pastors, interviewers, aspiring broadcasters, motivators, mentors, teachers etc – especially if you are a foreigner.

“It is still the only accent taught to foreigners who wish to learn a British model”

David Crystal, The English Language.

It pays to build up your confidence - the voice of authority and power can be yours. Develop it and speak with eloquence to spare.
